Summer at Southfork Ranch

Southfork became famous when studio execs selected our ranch as the home of oil tycoon J.R. Ewing and his family on the TV series Dallas. Much of the onsite filming during the show’s 14 seasons took place during the summer, while the audience anxiously awaited the fall premiere that would reveal the resolution to the previous season’s cliffhanger.

Here at Southfork Ranch, we still enjoy productive summers. July and August are the hot months, with temperatures ranging from lows in the mid-70s up to balmy near-100-degree days. However, we Texans aren’t afraid of a little sunshine. In addition to scheduled parties like our July 4 Freedom Celebration, we host events from summer weddings to massive family picnics loaded with summer essentials like hot dogs, watermelon and lemonade.

Guided tours and horseback trail rides are available daily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Plus, our Southfork Ranch tour guides are always ready to regale guests with insider stories about the Ewing family and the show’s hidden secrets. Once you’ve seen J.R.’s bedroom and examined the family tree, here are a few extra summer events to check out.

Celebrate Freedom

As locals gear up for fireworks and other July 4 fanfare, we’re hosting a red, white and blue bash of our own. Head to Southfork Ranch on Saturday, June 24 for a family-friendly celebration of Independence Day featuring food, music and merchants. This year’s lineup includes Josh Wilson, Britt Nicole, Compass Worship and Stars Go Dim.

The Bodyguard

Canadian R&B songstress Deborah Cox stars in the musical adaptation of the popular Whitney Houston flick, on stage July 18-30 at the Music Hall at Fair Park. The show includes hits like “I Will Always Love You,” How Will I Know” and “I’m Every Woman.” A must-see for Houston fans (the late singer, not the town).

Music in the Park

Thursday nights through July 27, The Harbor Amphitheatre hosts free concerts overlooking Lake Ray Hubbard. Bring a blanket and stop in for a variety of rock, pop and tribute bands. CLICK HERE to view the schedule.

Dollar Days

Throughout the month of August, Dallas Arboretum is running a $1 entrance fee special. See 19 gardens spread across 66 acres, and purchase refreshing summertime treats like root beer floats, pie, and hot dogs for just two bucks each.
