What You Should Know About Dallas’ Tour de Cure at Southfork Ranch

Walking, running and cycling isn’t just good for your body – it can also be good for your fellow man. On Saturday, October 14, Dallas-Fort Worth locals and visitors will get active for charity at Southfork Ranch – the exterior filming set of the nighttime TV soap Dallas. The historic Texas ranch is hosting Dallas’ annual Tour de Cure, a 5K run and cycle race benefiting The American Diabetes Association.

The Association defines diabetes as “a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life.” While genetic and environmental factors like food choices or lack of activity play a role in the disease, further causes remain unidentified. The funds raised during Dallas’ Tour will help researchers as they work towards a cure.

The Basics

Racers pay a $20 registration fee to run or walk a 5K race, which translates to a little over three miles. Cyclists can opt to race 5, 15, 30 or 65 miles depending on their comfort level. All races start between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Saturday. Run or bike at your own pace, whether you’re racing solo or as part of a family or corporate team. Lunch and a free Tour de Cure t-shirt is yours if you register and meet fundraising minimums.

Fundraising 101

Goals of the Tour de Cure include increasing diabetes awareness and raising money for the American Diabetes Association. Participants agree to raise a minimum of $200 from donations when they sign up for the event. How you collect the money is up to you. Racers are encouraged to start with friends, family and co-workers, educating them on the causes and risks of diabetes. Spectators and community members can pledge money to sponsor a racer, or donate directly to the charity.

The American Diabetes Association holds the BBB’s Wise Giving Alliance Seal for National Charities. Curious where your funds go? According to the Tour de Cure’s 2017 Fundraising Guide, 73% of every dollar donated to the Association goes towards research, services and advocacy measures for people afflicted with Type 1 or 2 diabetes.

5 Reasons to Participate

1.     You need to get up and go. 80% of American adults don’t get enough exercise. Set your fitness app, put in your headphones and go get those 10,000 steps!
2.     You want to give (but you’re not prepared to run, or walk or bike). Sponsor a racer, donate to ADA or head to Southfork Ranch and just spectate. The runners could use some cheering on.
3.     You have diabetes, or a friend/family member does. What better reason to donate your time and money towards a cure?
4.     You’ll take any excuse to hang with your friends and have lunch.
5.     You just want to see the Ewing mansion at Southfork Ranch. Hey, we don’t judge.

More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, according to the CDC. One in four doesn’t even know they have the disease. By participating in the 2017 Tour de Cure at Southfork Ranch, you can make a difference in their lives – while getting your blood flowing and your heart racing.
